The accident is being handled by traffic homicide investigators. State Trooper Curtis Summerville explains why saying, "Anytime a city vehicle or state vehicle is involved in any type collision of this magnitude, it's protocol for us to do a traffic homicide investigation", said Summerville: "That really doesn't mean anything other than the fact that a traffic homicide investigation is a more comprehensive investigation because of the sensitivity of the vehicles involved," Summerville explained.

The investigation will be turned over to the Lawrence County District Attorney, who will then determine if any charges will be brought against officer Brandon Mundy.

The cause of the fatal crash is still under investigation.
